Rewind To The Time: Snoop Dogg

Clash jumps back in time to the machine in October 1995, Silver Lake, Los Angeles, California, where Snoop was fighting against a murder case and try to leave Death Row Records ...

What really happened to hip-hop in the mid 90s? Why was it so important? I was caught like a rebellious runaway, raised by the renegades to Death Row Records as we plotted our escape and create a new world order. We did not know in ignorance and arrogance of youth that we really unpacked. But what really became of the material made by some of the most inventive artists of this generation? Has it been forever lost in the vaults of the now defunct, bankrupt and infamous record label? After years of my own pain and loss, I am still trying to work out what happened to our creations and why they were seen as such a threat to the powers that be.

Snoop Dogg is now an undisputed international star but, back when I knew him, he was like my big brother, fighting a murder case and struggling to get his own voice heard. He was kind, charismatic, funny and always cool – even when the heat was on. He always cared for his people – regardless of their backgrounds; Big C-Style , his ‘sleeping’ business partner, and artist Tray Deee both had strong gang affiliations. In his efforts to get off Death Row back in 1995, Snoop started up his own record label signed to Warner Records – Doggystyle Records – later in 1996 forced to sign it over to Death Row. I was involved in the whole process and found recently a copy of one of the interviews I wrote up. It captures more of the creative and positive vibe we all had at that time. We were full of hope in desperate, desperate times and really believed. Tupac had just got out of jail and we thought we could break free. Then things got dark…Hindsight is supposed to be 20-20 vision but I am still trying to find the missing piece of the puzzle. Who stopped us and why? We learn more from the failures of history than the successes so I am writing this in the hope people can see where we went wrong and learn from it. I wish the music could be recovered as that would tell you more than this article ever could. Recording music and its safe archiving is more important than record sales.Music speaks the truth to future generations more than the history books ...

"Intro Endo .... Doggystyle come. There is a saying "the cat who sleeps." Well, that Dogg has not been sleeping much. Neither should it be stayed. Snoop Doggy Dogg has started his own label and is ready to bust out the world with the first "Doggystyle."

Tori Amos - 500 Miles Lyrics

He walked 300 miles

Just to bring, to

Bring me bread

His body like a sculpture

Almost decorated

And I'll wake him

As the dawn does

And we'll break in

On the bus

Saying this was

Made for us and love

In lovers' communion

For 500 miles

And in 500 miles

Will he break, bring me again

In lovers' communion

For 500 miles

And in 500 miles

Will we break, even break

Step it up

Grab your phone

Get your suitcase

There's no time to waste

A big adventure awaits
