Oswalt Outing 'Should Be Interesting'
It has been 21 days - three full weeks - since we met Roy Oswalt throw a lot in a major league game.
This last trip was one to forget. He allowed five runs on six hits and was pulled after three innings, kick off a wild stretch of three weeks.
By the time reporters reached the locker room after the loss to Arizona, Oswalt has disappeared.
It turns out that he was heading to Mississippi, where he spent eight days clearing the debris on his property after a storm ravaged the region.
When he returned to Philadelphia on May 5, he threw a bullpen session which immediately alerted both players and the team that things were not quite right.
A passage on the DL 15 days followed, as Oswalt admitted he had been dealing with back pain since April 15, but had pitched through it.
Back problems cleared up, Oswalt said, but his early rehabilitation in Clearwater, May 12 is not encouraging. He allowed seven hits with a batting line of Class A, and his catcher, Carlos Ruiz, Oswalt said the speed was down and his command has been problematic.
And now, five days later, the Phillies are willing to roll the dice with the right handed 33 year against Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman.
"It should be interesting," said Oswalt.
Indeed it should.
Oswalt said his back is fine, but he admits the strength of arm, leg strength and rust are all questions.
"I think the important thing is the force of arms. If you have not thrown in occasionally, it might make a start or two to go," he said. "It might not be good enough this time It might not be good next time, but if you continue to do so, it should be."
In this spirit, there were obvious questions about why - especially with Vance Worley pitching and a stopgap starting - the Phillies would not Oswalt early rehabilitation of more to work out the kinks.
The answers are not exactly overwhelming.
"They needed someone to start," said Oswalt.
â € œI think we thought â € "says he wants to go and heâ € ™ s ready," said Charlie Manuel.
"Weâ € ™ ll be watching him," GM Ruben Amaro said."If he doesnâ € ™ t have the same speed and you need to keep showing that on the mound with us, so Iâ € ™ ll be keeping my eye on it. But it doesnâ € ™ t have anything physically wrong with him.

Meanwhile, his average fastball velocity was off about 1 mph even before the layoff, and Ruiz admitted that against the Single-A hitters, Oswalt had been wary of throwing it. Based on Fan Graphs' data, only the Rockies have been more productive against
This dream scenario is unfortunately rarely the case, because there are other competitors that make number one an increasing difficult mark to hit – and, also, most notably – the link graph has a rapid rate of attrition. Every website succumbs to the
Data used to compose the colorful graphs come from the US Geological Survey's Streamgaging Program. The earliest stream gauges were in place in 1889 with the installation of the first measuring devices on the Rio Grande River in New Mexico.
The first graph (from this source) shows the long-term history of the four-week average of initial claims. So why is the 400000 level so significant? The next graph shows why. Historically that has been the inflection point where the economy starts to
I can, though, point to the only data I have that might explain this, and that would be the release point graphs. Now, It's hard to see just looking at it, but his curveball release point is identical this year to where it was in 2009.
Scalextric and velocity time graphs | teachphysics.org
Using toys is often an excellent means of concepts of physics, illustrating, and Scalextric in particular has a huge range of possibilities.
Scalextric can be used to generate velocity-time graphs in an event that involves no fewer than 15 students at a time. To do this activity and you'll need a fair amount of runway. Many of your students are required to have at home for a word in advance may be required.
Building a large oval circuit with 2 straight lines as long as possible. Along one of the straights hold light gates connected to data loggers. I typically do this with 5 light gates although with a long enough circuit you could easily squeeze in more. Depending on what sort of data loggers you have at your school (I use Logits) you now need to measure the speeds at the different points along the track.
Position a student behind each logit and have them record the speed through their gate. You also need to know what time the car passed through each gate if we are to turn this all into a meaningful velocity-time graph.
To do this, position a second student at each light gate with a stopwatch. This is the tricky bit.Timers need to start their watches as the car passes through the door the first light. From there, students each stop their clocks as the car passes through their door lightly.
If all results are written on the card by a volunteer, a velocity-time graph can be drawn.
