Dandelions May Soon be Used as a Sustainable Rubber on Ford Cars

PR News Online - 14-May-2011-Ford is partnering with the State University of Ohio in search of sustainable resources that will be used in the production of Ford cars future. The resource of choice is the Russian dandelion, Taraxacum kok-saghyz, which contains a milky white substance in the root that can be used to produce rubber parts.

This rubber is both natural and sustainable, which is a radical change of synthetic rubbers that are currently used.Ford's plan is to eventually use the resource as a modifier of plastic cup holders, floor mats, and upholstery.

Researchers are able to grow this particular dandelion looking at Ohio State University Ohio Agricultural and Development Center (OARDC). Before the replacement rubber is used, it will be evaluated by researchers at Ford to ensure the quality of documents and ensure that it meets standards of sustainability.

Dandelions are not the only way Ford is seeking to reduce its carbon footprint.petroleum-based foams have been replaced with soy foam on many Ford vehicles. This helped the automaker to reduce its consumption of petroleum oil by more than 3 million pounds per year.

Ford is also experimenting with wheat straw, a by-product of growing and processing wheat. Wheat straw is usually discarded, but the company is looking into using it to reinforce the plastic storage bins in the Ford Flex. plastic straw of wheat is odorless and weighs up to 10% less than plastic or talc reinforced fiberglass, while indicating a greater integrity of unreinforced plastic.

In recent years, Ford has shown great progress in reducing its carbon footprint by increasing its use of sustainable resources and technology development of fuel efficient vehicles.

The Dandelions Are Here!!

Dandelions are here! I am completely biased: I LOVE DANDELIONS! Maybe your idea of a magnificent court and involves a green lawn without weeds such as Astroturf, and you're among the masses who spend a lot of time and energy pesticiding, mowing, and pulling dandelions. We would do better to make peace with dandelions and use as food or medicine rather than the poisoning of our home-spaces, then rushing to the store to buy supplements / pharmaceuticals that contain the same medicinal qualities as dandelion gives himself! Yeah, right! All parts of the dandelion are medicinal and are completely free - a perfect example of medicine for the people! For me, dandelions embody persistence, resilience, abundance and Radiance. I love that grows everywhere - an ally of the urban and rural plants. I have a special place in my heart for the dandelion and the seeds of great magnitude. In my correspondence with U.S.Political Prisoners (please consult the resources listed in the sidebar on the right) I often attract dandelions in their various stages - green buds about to burst, the flowers at their height of brilliance, and stems seed-bearing sending forth its seeds in the wind. I like that no matter how the son of barbed concrete walls and they accumulate to separate us, life confine and eliminate signs of hope, even dandelions find their way in! On my first visit to a particular prison guards acted obnoxious and support has been very viscous. As I entered the area where I would soon finally see my friend after filling out forms and enclose my things and go through the metal detector and is stamped in a crack between the brick wall and cement floor of a huge dandelion plant with about 20 flowers was booming! I had never before seen so many flowers on a plant and the sight took me away from my anger at the conditions of the place in total joy to this embodiment of the exuberant strength. ~ Is rich in vitamins C and B and minerals like calcium, potassium and iron.Greens in early spring were traditionally eaten to cleanse the body of heavy foods of winter and prepare for the warmer months. It is a tonic urine, relieve fluid retention without depleting the body of potassium, as do pharmaceutical diuretics. Can be eaten fresh or cooked, taken as a tea or tincture.
