Concert review: Shhhhh, Tim McGraw is singing
Tim McGraw knows how to make an entry.
Saturday night, the country hottie 44-year-old began his concert at the Xcel Energy Center sauntering out from behind the main stage, shaking hands with admirers on his way to a small stage that served as his perch for the first song.
But where most acts would use this gimmick stage opening to launch a "let's get party started"-style anthem, McGraw chose instead to sing a number of new dark called "Halo." It sounded like a surprisingly melancholy REMballad, and McGraw made it lit from below and surrounded by clouds of smoke, a level of theatricality is not often seen at concerts country.
This was only the beginning of what proved to be very different from a show that offered McGraw just nine months ago, when he sold the gallery to the State Fair of Minnesota. At this concert, McGraw focused on his optimistic crowd-pleasing hits, which makes it the ideal late night of the summer. Holy SaturdayPaul, however, he wrote back the intensity, preferring the quiet corners of the most nostalgic of his vast catalog, "Please Remember Me" (originally written by Rodney Crowell) to " When the stars go blue, "a gorgeous number from Ryan Adams McGraw probably done better.
McGraw has also used the night to present his new album, "Emotional Traffic '. The problem? Nobody has heard. McGraw wrapped the album last fall - the fulfillment of his often rocky face with Curb Records - but so far the label has not yet announced a release date.Instead, Curb took what was supposed to be her first single, "feels good on my lips" on the compilation of last year's "Number One Hits."
Yet that did not stop playing McGraw several songs on the album unique. The instantly likeable "Right Back at Ya" felt like a late 70s pop classic Southern California, while McGraw introduced "Better Than I Used to Be" by announcing that he is "one of my favorite songs I've never recorded. "The latter also served as a sigh of relief for those put off by the cold" Halo ", as is the kind of unapologetically romantic country weeper big screen will do a lot of money.
To the delight of the crowd of 10,541, McGraw has accelerated the pace of the second half of the show. He invited the two opening acts - the Band Perry and Luke Bryan - Back on stage to join him, which is always a nice touch of a headliner as large as McGraw.
Bryan has played the X this year - he opened for Rascal Flatts in January - and feels as if it was a bit of a hit or two in the headliner on his own. It is quite possible some people preferring to Bryan on Saturday night short game, higher energy, even with its coverage quite incongruous Metallica's "Enter Sandman.
