| In 1934 Benz Disposal Company
was founded by Louie Visco in Los Angeles, California. Typical
of "garbage men" of the time, his family owed a hog farm and
the food waste that was collected on his routes went towards
providing
feed for the hogs.
Mr. Visco started with one truck and grew into the largest single
waste collection company west of the Rocky Mountains at one time.
Benz Disposal Co., Inc. became the first rubbish company to go
public in the United State in 1962. That company, Universal By-Products
was merged with Waste Management which went on to become the
largest waste management company in the world.
